Discovered: 1st September 1854 (time unknown), from Washington, D.C., by James Ferguson
Notes: Very young asteroid, one of the largest (approximately tied for seventh place) and the third roundest.

  • August 23 – Birth of Moritz Moszkowski, Polish/German composer
  • August 27 – English lawyer Alfred Wills and party set out for the first ascent of the Wetterhorn in Switzerland, regarded as the start of the “golden age of alpinism”.
  • August 31-September 8 – An epidemic of cholera in London kills over 10,000. Dr. John Snow traces the source of one outbreak (which killed 500) to a single water pump.
  • September 3 – Birth of Anna Sandström, Swedish social reformer


Naming information

Name origin: Greek; one of the three Kharites and goddess of good cheer, mirth, merriment and joy. Her name is the feminine form of the Greek word euphrosynos meaning “merriment”.
